About this apartment

The 'Lighthouse' is a special lodging overlooking the town and harbor of Grand Marais from it's center. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. You can sit up in bed and view the harbor and the big lake beyond. There is covered parking that leads to the stairway that takes you up to the Lighthouse. The view of the old harbor from the balcony is stunning. There is a wrought iron table and chairs on the balcony for relaxing. Inside the Lighthouse you will find a queen bed, tile shower and bathroom, galley kitchen, custom dining table for two, LCD TV with Direct TV and blueray. The bed is set at an angle and faces southeast to capture the views of the harbor in the morning through large windows. Many of our guests yearn for a connection with nature, the lake, the community, high thread count sheets, reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. Where possible we also "rest" the Lighthouse between stays for 24-72 hours. Please see our protocol description in this listing. There are transom windows around the perimeter of the apartment that let in light from all points on the compass but do not compromise privacy. Notice how the light changes as the day progresses. Observe the color differences around sunset or early in the morning as the Great Lake passes through it's moods. The ceiling is very high and is vaulted and timberframed with unique 'Dragon Beams' from local timberframe artisans. Topping the lighthouse is an octagonal cupola that lets light in all day and moonlight at night. And on top of the cuppola is a custom copper ball, in keeping with the lighthouses of the North Shore. An antique ship's light occupies the cuppola and can guide you as you walk home after a night of festivities in the town. There is an all cedar Finnish Sauna next door to the Lighthouse for the exclusive use of the Lighthouse guests for an additional fee. Usage comes with robes and additional towels and complete instructions. Simply state you would like to add the Sauna to the notes your stay when you make your reservation and we will contact you with details. When you wake in the morning seagulls are your companions and you may hear their webby feet tapping on the roof in the morning. Watch the fog roll in and out from your bed while you drink your morning coffee, and listen to the strains of local live music as the town celebrates the short summers at night. The gally kitchen is small but thoroughly modern with all the necessities. The Lighthouse is above the 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin', a restored historic log home and is next door to the 'Writer's Cabin' and 'The Boathouse' a recently constructed timberframe home that is the residence of the owners. If you are traveling with a large group, consider including the neighboring Fisherman's and Writer's cabins which share the property. There is capacity for a group of 12 or so if you rent all the cabins. You can get the whole family reunion or wedding group on one site! The Lighthouse is known for it's inspiring charm. There have been plays and musicals written here, a handfull of proposals, and a good number of honeymoons. Come share the fantastic energy that is The Lighthouse.

Lastly, we are implementing an incentive for you to choose trip insurance. We have discounted our rates on our direct website here by an additional 7% (the total savings between our direct site and say... AirBnB

is now 14-21% only if you book on this direct site). We are doing this so that you may select trip insurance during your booking process. It will be offered to you while you are completing your booking and they charge 7%. We do not make any money on that. The cancellation policy we have had for 10 years is as follows:

You may cancel within 48 hours of your booking for any reason. After that you can cancel with a 10% penalty up until 60 days prior to your arrival. After that you may cancel but your deposit can not be refunded.

If you have trip insurance you can be reimbursed according to which policy you chose. And we are subsidizing it for you by having reduced our rental rates well below any other rates where our properties can be found. It's up to you, pocket the savings and run the risk of cancellation, or still get some savings and have the peace of mind of having some of your investment in your vacation protected in case of unforeseen events. Here is a link to the insurance company, otherwise it is all presented to you when you book so that you can make an informed decision at that time: https://dzv514xd9amig.cloudfront.net/content/docs/RentalGuardian%20-%20Overview.pdf?v=0116da11ea74cfb3b939b87f3a2c5dc676da5f83

A Great Stay in Grand Marais

From its quaint little perch, The Lighthouse offers a beautiful view of the bay. And, it’s just steps from the North House Folk School.

    Great Place!

Due to some travel issues I was unable to stay but was able to gift the stay to my sister and her husband. They said the place was spotlessly clean, the provided check-in /check-out instruction clear, the hosts were friendly and concerned that there stay was pleasant. They really enjoyed The Lighthouse and the proximity to everything in Grand Marais.

    So cozy and relaxing!

We loved the lighthouse! Perfect for a little couple getaway. Was easy to access and was very clean. Was so cozy and comfortable. Just enough room! Nice view looking out on the lake. We enjoyed being able to make breakfast and lunch here each day and then adventuring out for dinner. Would definitely recommend to any couple looking for a nice, relaxing getaway!

    Enjoyable

Our time in the lighthouse was quite enjoyable, and it’s close enough to walk downtown. You can see some of the harbor from the deck when you just want to sit and relax.

The little box at the top of the stairs

Magical, cozy, comfortable. Loved the views. Easy parking and access. We loved the layout, and listening to WTIP on the old fashioned radio. Our 30th wedding anniversary was so enjoyable thanks to the Lighthouse, we had a great Thanksgiving dinner at Naniboujou Lodge too. Saw the sea smoke on a cold morning, and a freighter passing on the lake. Great communication with the owner, we would definitely rent this property again.
