Relaxed elegance, beautiful gardens
The Sunbird Lilongwe is a beautiful hotel. It has the relaxed elegance of an earlier era, with low-slung building and open corridors with view of the extensive, beautifully-maintained gardens. The rooms have been recently renovated so they are very comfortable, and there is now a gym (I tried the elliptical, which worked very well) as well as a small pool. The breakfasts are ample, with omelettes made to order, and the service is excellent. I stayed twice, once on each end of my trip to Lilongwe, and I enjoyed both visits. This is Old Town, so outside the hotel the roads are rough and sidewalks are dirt paths, but if you venture a block down to the big shopping center, the Bombay Palace also has excellent Indian food.
