Milan’s looming neo-classical landmarks are sure to make your jaw drop. No matter where you stroll you’ll come across churches, citadels, and palaces. The most iconic of these line Milan’s majestic central plaza, the Piazza del Duomo. Landmarks include the unmistakable Duomo di Milano, or Cathedral of Milan. Bedecked with lavish gothic carvings as far as the eye can see, the intricate architecture took almost six centuries to complete. For a taste of Milan’s high-end boutiques, take a stroll down to the Quadrilatero. This iconic fashion district’s home to exclusive fashion houses, whose stores may be out of your price range, but whose displays are prime window shopping territory. Glamorous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is another high-end shopping spot, but for something more on budget, head to Corso Buenos Aires – a thrumming boulevard lined with chain stores. If you’re a sports fan, no trip to Milan can be complete without catching an AC or Inter Milan football match at huge San Siro Stadium.

Where to stay

Noted as the heart and soul of Milan, most visitors would choose to stay near the Piazza del Duomo. It’s the perfect spot if you fancy strolling from hotel room to pavement bistros, boutiques, and the city’s landmark museums and historic sights. For those on a budget, the area around Stazione Centrale has plenty of discount hotels and hostels. You can jump on the metro for easy access to the center, so you won’t feel cut off from the sights. Another good value neighborhood is Citta Studdi, a buzzing student area to the east of the city center brimming with laid back eateries, vibrant bars, and cool hangout spots.

How to get to Milan

Most international visitors fly to Milan Malpensa Airport, 50 kilometers from downtown. There are direct flights from New York and Miami, as well as flights from most major European cities. With journeys up to an hour from the airport by car, train or bus, the easiest way into the city center is to catch a train stopping at many city center stations including Milano Centrale. From here you can take the metro to anywhere around the city. If you’re flying into Milan Linate Airport, you can take a bus or cab to the city center.
