Inexpensive but showing its age
A rather worn old style hotel, that was good only because of the low price paid (£28 for a single room on a Thursday night). On the plus side, it felt “real“, not boring business like. And it had a certain sort of quaint charm. And, as I say, it was inexpensive. On the downside, it had a rather unpleasant smell of fried food in places (from the chippy next-door?) and some of the fixtures and fittings in the room and ensuite bathroom needed attention. But, the bed was comfortable and warm enough, so all in all I was very satisfied, at £28 per night for a single room.

All the reviews are pretty accurate... But...
I read the reviews and yes... It's in a very busy area so it's noisy at night. Honestly in a busy city I'd be surprised if it wasn't. We had a room on the first floor at the front of the hotel facing the club that everyone moans about being noisy (!) and yes, it's noisy. No shock there. The road is busy. Again, no surprise. The hotel is old and yes could do with some modernisation in places but in actual fact has everything you need and is excellent value for a city centre stay. My one and only complaint, as mentioned in other reviews is the smell from the nail bars downstairs. The room absolutely stinks of what I assume is acetone. Our clothes smell of it and it's actually surprising that they can run this kind of business under rooms where people are staying. Creaky floors... Yeah. That too. We were a bit conscious of it until we realised the nail bar under us was closed so hey ho... Didn't matter to us. Even the cackling from what I can only assume we're drunken cats in the room next door was funny rather than annoying. Would we stay again. Yep. Certainly. It's a lovely city, friendly staff, the hotel is incredibly convenient and other than the smell in the room which I guess the hotel can't really help... All good. Oh breakfast was fine too. Again all the staff were friendly and helpful.

Crown hotel
We got what we paid for, the room was very dated, the bathroom was very 1980s, shower had the old curtain with the 2 taps combo, very neglected!! Badly needs updated, good location although we probably wouldn't go back

Great staff but everything else awful
Large damp patches in ceiling and down walls, nasty corridor smells, next to a nightclub so very noisy with music and screaming til very late, extremely dated decor with fixed head shower pointing horizontally and not into the bath, only way to use it was by holding the shower head so had to shower one handed, unmarked, poorly lit rough car park where people blocked others in as it wasn’t clear where the entrance/ exit was, causing an hour wait til someone happened to be leaving and moved their car, so customers squabling. Very helpful, friendly staff it’s only saving grace!

Good value but in need of refurbishment
Tired hotel that you can see would have been wonderful 40-50 years back. Great location in city with free car parking at the hotel which is a real bonus. Staff friendly and helpful. Room was a good size and everything worked except the heating (some problem with radiator) so given a convector heater which worked well. Ensuite in need of refurbishment but functional. Breakfast room was modern and buffet breakfast was satisfactory. Very good price. Overall it was fine for a one night stay

Perfect location for a couple of nights
Fabulous location two minutes from the railway station and close to the city centre so ideal for a couple of nights. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room quiet and spacious. The only issue was the room could do with a bit of TLC - the curtain rail was literally hanging by a thread and the bathroom ceiling was slightly mouldy.
