About this cabin

The Wapiti Bear Den is the perfect place to get away from it all. Situated on 4 private acres, we're surrounded by the soaring Absaroka mountains and the quiet of nature. The Bear Den is located in beautiful Wapiti, Wyoming, just 30 minutes from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park and 20 minutes from Cody, Wyoming. This spacious one bedroom guest house was newly remodeled in 2018 with rustic western decor and includes air conditioning, a full bath, a fully equipped kitchen and a large living room with a queen size sleeper sofa.

After a day of exploring, you can kick back on your own patio and enjoy the mountain views and wide open spaces. If cooking is your passion, prepare dinners on the outdoor grill or in the Bear Den's full kitchen. Wireless internet, DirecTV, a DVD player/DVD library and a collection of books, are also provided during your stay. During hot summer days, turn up the AC to keep cool and comfortable. The Wapiti Bear Den has all the comforts of home plus Yellowstone country right out your front door.

After being closed for more than a year due to COVID, we're happy to begin welcoming guests back on July 7, 2021. At the Bear Den, we're committed to providing the safest possible environment for our guests. For this reason, we'll be adhering to guidelines which have been developed based on CDC recommendations, including strict cleaning protocols and keeping the Bear Den empty for more than 24 hours between guests.

Our location between Cody, Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park makes the Bear Den the ideal home base to explore the area. The road west to Yellowstone's East Entrance travels through a wide canyon carved by the pristine North Fork of the Shoshone River, where wildlife and rugged beauty abound. President Theodore Roosevelt called this scenic byway 30 of the most beautiful miles in America.

The gateway town of Cody, Wyoming, lies 20 miles to the east of the Bear Den. Cody, known as "The Rodeo Capital of the World", offers a nightly rodeo in the summer months, along with shopping, dining, and the must-see Buffalo Bill Center of the West, a complex of five museums featuring art and artifacts of the American West.

For the horse lover, the McCullough Peaks Herd Management Area, home to over 100 wild horses, is just a short drive from the Bear Den. Located 20 miles east of Cody, Wyoming, McCullough Peaks boasts bands of flashy pintos, colorful sorrels and speckled sabinos, along with pronghorn, sage grouse, prairie dogs, and other native wildlife.

The Bear Den is also a short drive from the Beartooth Highway – a National Scenic Byways All-American Road. This 68 mile byway winds its way through southwest Montana and northwest Wyoming and leads into Yellowstone National Park at its Northeast Entrance. It's a must see!

If fly fishing is your passion, the Bear Den is located less than a five minute drive to fishing access on the renowned Shoshone River. The North Fork of the Shoshone hosts rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, brook trout, Yellowstone cutthroat, brown trout, rainbow-cutthroat hybrids and some lake trout on the lower stretches of the river.

Whether you spend your time exploring Yellowstone or visiting the Cody/Wapiti area, the outdoor recreation possibilities of northwest Wyoming are endless. Hiking, fishing, horseback-riding, photography, bird watching, wildlife watching, and biking are just a few of the many recreational

pursuits that you can enjoy during your stay. With their thorough knowledge of the area, Sandy and Steve can answer any questions you might have to help make your stay the best it can be.

    Beautiful Home away from Home

This was an amazing location with wonderful views of the mountains and a newly renovated guest house! Sandy and Steve provided thoughtful snacks for our family and even included pancake mixes and coffee/tea for our morning breakfast. Sandy is very attentive to details and has provided everything that a family might need for a restful stay. Bring your family here not only to enjoy Yellowstone but to experience what it’s like to be cared for by a loving host!

The Bear Den is outstanding in every respect. The property is finished to an extremely high standard and is spotless. The owners have put a lot of thought into your every need whilst on holiday. Our only regret is that we only stayed for 2 nights and ideally we should have stayed longer. If we're visiting the area again, we would definitely stay here as there's many places of interest within easy travelling distance.

    Perfect spot to get away!

The Bear Den was amazing... Sandy is a thoughtful owner, the property is very clean, it's situated in a beautiful valley along the highway between Cody and Yellowstone. We were able to make day trips into Yellowstone to see the majority of the park. They were LONG days, but it was doable - just be aware that the east entrance will close during the snow season. We also took advantage of the location to explore western Wyoming just a bit - the wild horses at McCullough Peaks were amazing, and we also made a day trip to the Big Horn National Forest. Just be mindful of the weather, as the BLM property is unimproved (i.e. requires offroad capability) and the passes in the Big Horn range can be closed due to snow. All in all, a great experience!

We had a very enjoyable visit at Bear Den. Sandy and Steve made the stay feel like home. The extra touches and amenities were greatly appreciated. Bonus to meet the photographer of one of our photos that we have in our own home :). Thank you again.

    Perfect Retreat!

My husband and I are traveling cross-country and have been staying in hotels. The Bear Den was a welcome retreat where we could relax in the evenings after exploring Yellowstone and Grand Teton. We enjoyed being able to make our own breakfast in a well-equipped kitchen, and sit in a comfortable, well decorated space to plan our next days adventure. We highly recommend The Bear Den.

Perfect getaway at the Bear Den

If you’re looking to do a trip to Yellowstone and are looking for a cozy cabin nestled in the perfect location, look no further! From the moment we booked, we knew we were going to enjoy our stay. Upon booking we immediately received a personal message with all of the details regarding our check-in and stay. The Bear Den is nestled right where you want to be, in our opinion. Not only is the East entrance of Yellowstone easily accessible, but you also are only 25 minutes from town. One of our favorite things about the Bear Den was all the thoughtfulness that has gone in to the accommodations. From the cooler with ice packs ready to be packed for a day trip (why we didn’t think of bringing a cooler, I’m not sure), to the cabinets having every cooking utensil and most common condiments, it made our trip worry free. If you forgot it, chances are it might already be there. The Bear Den has the privacy you want, yet if you need anything at all Sandy and Steve make themselves easily reachable. Sandy was even able to provide helpful tips for spotting wildlife. We cannot recommend the Bear Den enough for any couple or small family looking to explore Yellowstone and beautiful Wyoming/Montana. We will see you again, soon! Bob & Chelsea
