We thought we had booked a room with Hotels.com, but when we arrived at the Hotel La Rosa del Tirreno they informed us they did not have a room in the hotel. They explained that they had sent us an email message offering us alternative accommodation nearby. We had not received that information however, as we had just stayed in a campsite in Sicily with no working internet and then had taken a 20 hour ferry trip from Sicily to Livorno during which we chose not to use the ferry's expensive internet. The alternative room offered by the Hotel was in a complex about 300 metres away that involved walking along and across a very busy road that had no pavements. We felt we had to accept the offered room because it was after 8pm at night when we arrived. We regretted that, principally because the air-conditioning unit was faulty and since it was so hot we got very little sleep. The room also did not have any internet that we could access because the wifi password did not work. So, a bad experience for us. The big question is why could we not have the room that we had originally booked. And secondly, why had the hotel owners not said in their email to us, or when we first arrived, that the room was not one that they owned. In fairness to the owners, the room was obtained for us at a lesser price than the owner of that room normally advertised, but we were not to know that the room would be so faulty (heating and internet-wise), for which the hotel owners took no responsibility
