Really nice location and super friendly owner. Real NYC vibes!

I think this is a great choice and great value for the location. Basically like a hotel but with shared bathrooms. My one complaint is that I was never able to establish wifi on my one night stay. They never got back to me with a solution, but they were friendly and hospitable. Great restaurants a block away.

It's mid-March, so didn't need it. Arthur was polite and helpful. My room was clean and comfortable. The location was fine, there were bikes and scooters avaliable for rent to do more extensive roaming.

I stayed at the McGaw guesthouse with my husband and seven month old baby. The goats were super accommodating, friendly, and really made our stay comfortable. I am looking forward to returning.

The location was outstanding for our needs near Central Park, and near the subway to get to our Broadway show. The service was very friendly and responsive to our needs. Our room, however, was better suited for a single traveler, and the biggest issue was a very soft mattress that neither one of us slept well on.

I read the mixed reviews and chose Macaw Guesthouse anyway - I am glad that I did. It was a reasonable option in expensive New York City and it was as described. Charming hosts who went out of their way to welcome me and ensure that I was comfortable. Short walk to transportation options and dining options nearby. Highly recommend and would stay again.

They went above and beyond for us. 1) They came out and helped us find parking and gave us a tour of the facility. 2) THEY SHIPPED MY LOST WALLET TO WHERE I WAS STAYING! They have gone above and beyond. Very clean and very kind highly recommend!

Not the Waldorf Astoria and a bit pricey but NY city is expensive. The room was adequate for me and it was just a couple of blocks from the presentation I was attending...so it was convenient. The staff was nice and the house and kitchen accessible to the guests. The bed was very comfortable. Building dates back to the 1930s according to the family who owns the guesthouse so it is an older building which does show. Bring your toiletries but they do provide towels. You need to share an outside bathroom. Also it can be a bit noisy outside your window since a city train is close to the building and also they are doing construction on the block. Still I was satisfied with the convenience of staying at the guesthouse.

Host was very friendly and helpful. The room was cozy and simple, exactly what I needed for this trip, and everything seemed clean and easy to navigate. There is an excellent pizza place down the street and the building wasn't far from the subway or from buses. Had a great experience and would stay again!

My room was overbooked, so I ended up on a cot in the front of the main room, which was very noisy with people coming and going. Fortunately one of the staff was there to let me in, because I called the phone number and couldn't reach anyone. There is a hot tub in the property photos, but it wasn't available. They offer free coffee, but what they had was a coffee maker and only instant coffee - which don't work together. The host was very accommodating due to the situation, but with everything I experienced, I wouldn't suggest staying there for what they charge.

Could not stay there to a point where I had to find another hotel and no refund for the prepaid 4 nights. Expedia should not be listing such guesthouses.

Cleaning staff admitted to taking my beer from the refrigerator. Gave a run around about being paid later...never got my beer and the staff was no where to be seen. Don't leave your belongings or staff will help themselves and act nice about it.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want fancy, amenities, this isn't for you. If you're looking for an affordable alternative to stay in Manhattan that is clean, with great owners, in a quiet, safe neighborhood, and just worried about a place to lay your head for the night, then this is the place for you. Being in East Harlem, it's a 3 block walk off the 6 train (2 down and 1 over), we found several excellent places in the area to eat that were clean, with good portions, at prices cheaper than I can eat in CT. We had an excellent experience, and will be staying here again in the future

AWFUL. Pics out of date. Property NOT as described. Dirty and disheveled. Did not receive room I paid extra for. No water in. “Hot tub”. Hosts entered my locked room when I was gone and moved my belongings to a room without a lock. Then accused me of stealing their key when I left it in the lockbox I originally took it from upon arrival.

No A/C. Outlets are old and terrible. Bed was very uncomfortable. Poor locks, small bathrooms.

I asked the manager if I could check in early, she said yes, I showed up and no one could let me in. I had to call repeatedly and ring the doorbell several times before the manager answered and told me someone will be there. After I waited I thought I could check in but couldn't because the person who let me in was another guest. Couldn't get into my room so I dropped off my bags. The manager on the phone asked me if I had cash and I had to remind her that I already paid online. They will try making you pay twice. Then another guest arrived who also couldn't get checked in. She thought I worked there but I had to explain the whole situation that she'll also need to wait. I had to get the wifi password from the first guest and while I was out he texted me when to come back to get my keys. The manager expects the guests to work for her when it comes to coordinating check in. They also cursed and told people to "Shut the f--k up!!!" I don't recommend this as it was a disorganized and unprofessional experience.

The host was kind, but the environment did not feel calm or secure during my stay. There was noticeable commotion when I arrived, and after reviewing past guest feedback, I realized this was not an isolated experience. I ended up leaving early and booking alternative accommodations. This may work for some, but it wasn’t the right fit for me, and I wouldn’t recommend it for travelers who prioritize quiet and a sense of safety.

Never received received a key lock code and no one returned my phone calls or text… we had no where to stay and all our plans were ruined… worst service and experience ever and we have travelled abroad…. Thank goodness I took the travel protection and expect a full refund… so disappointing!!!

This was the worse experience I have ever had using Expedia or any other private hosting service. NYPD had to be called to rescue us from our room after a fight between the owner and her son broke out in the living room. The police supervisor advised us that this location is a know narcotic drug spot and advised against any future stay. We left immediately and were fortunate to find other last minute accommodations.
