On the plus side:
The location is beautiful with open views across the countryside. The reception staff are willing, efficient, friendly and do their best in the face of quite a few challenges. The hotel is characterful.
On the downside:
It is not as advertised - if it was a product that we had bought we would have sent it back. We booked and paid for a hotel with a leisure centre and gym. It doesn't have either - no gym at all. We were promised fine dining - apparently it used to be, but it is far from that now, it has a casual cafe making pizzas and a few pasta meals which were ok for lunch. The kitchen is open so it is easy to see that these meals are not made fresh and are nowhere near fine dining. The hotel seems to be in the process of being run down with various aspects being left to poorly maintained. This was true in our room where half the lights didn't work, the taps had been replaced in the bathroom but leaving parts of the sink still with holes, the tennis court was far from the picture on the website - if it is not resurfaced in the next few months it will soon become unplayable. If the hotel was advertised accurately it may say 'charming, rustic, rural' but it should never say 5 star.
We wrote to the hotel after our stay to invite their comment but they did not reply.
