The Sunset Beach Resort, Takua Pa, is a very new and nice hotel right on the beachfront in a secluded part of the the Thai coastline, north of Khao Lak, on the island of Koh Kho Khao. It is a long taxi ride from Phuket airport and the taxi leaves you at the pier, where you catch a modified long-tail boat to cross the river to the island, where you are met by the resort taxi which takes you to the resort. This is a 2 hour trip so leave enough time to travel there after landing in Phuket. The river crossing boat is a bit of a surprise as it also takes up to 12 other passengers and 3 or motor bikes. The resort taxi is the usual utility with seats fitted on the back tray as is pretty common for tourist areas.
All that being said, the resort is wonderfully laid out, big air conditioned rooms or chalets, a big and lovely pool, a really good restaurant that serves both Thai and western food. I never tried their western food, but their Thai food was excellent. The staff are friendly and efficient and their Tour Desk offered interesting and well priced tours.
The resort is secluded to the point of isolation and so walks along the endless stretches of beaches is possible without encountering hordes of people. The water is calm and the only beach litter are shells that washed up with the tide. There is a great little beach restaurant 15 minutes walk to the north, where you can sit with your feet in the sand, have a meal or just a drink and watch the sun set
