Lifesaver-patrolled Main Beach is right at the end of the town’s main street, and you’re also at the casting-off point for watching dolphins, as well as diving at Julian Rocks.

Byron Bay Hinterland


If you're mobile and want to get away from the crowds, Byron Bay’s hinterland is the place to be. The “Rainbow Region” is a centre for alternative culture, and there are several relaxed, picturesque towns including Nimbin, The Channon, and Bangalow. You’ll be in the midst of unspoiled rainforest, green hills, and panoramic views, yet still within reach of inviting restaurants and shops. Highlights like Mount Warning and Minyon Falls are close by, and the beach is never far away.


The hinterland offers a wide choice of places to stay, from backpackers’ hostels in the bush to high-end resort hotels. There are lovingly restored cottages on rolling farmland, luxury apartments with sweeping views to the ocean, and secluded rainforest spa retreats.

Lennox Head


If you’re looking for a quieter beach vacation, but still want to be close to the attractions of Byron Bay, the seaside town of Lennox Head could be for you. Nearby Lake Ainsworth is popular with wind and kite surfers, and Seven Mile Beach is wild and unspoiled. Although small, Lennox Head offers a good range of shops and facilities.


This laid-back coastal town offers a range of accommodation from camping grounds, trailer parks, and backpacker hostels, to motels and international chains. If you’d rather be independent, there are self-catering holiday homes and apartments, many with great ocean views.

Located at the mouth of the Richmond River, Ballina also offers great beaches, an enticing selection of art and curio shops, and the “Giant Prawn” statue - a local landmark. As well as leisurely coastal walks, there are bike paths and river strolls, and a cinema and water park to keep the children happy. Ballina also has the convenience of being within close proximity to the region's airport.
