Party Island - Kuta's Legendary Nightlife

Find a place to stay

The sun sets early on equatorial Bali, but for partygoers, the night doesn't really get started until 10 PM or later. Sprawling Kuta is the island's centre of holiday revelry. At night, the resort telescopes into a half-mile rectangle of pubs, bars, dance clubs, and simple watering holes between Jalan Legian and the main beach road, Jalan Pantai Kuta.

Dance, dance, dance

Kuta's many resident DJs play music to please all tastes, and a midnight walk down Jalan Legian sounds a bit like a battle between 2 (or maybe 200) people who can't agree on a radio station. Just keep going until you hear something you like. Backpackers and students dominate the after-dark scene in central Kuta, while a slightly older, dressier crowd heads a few minutes north by taxi to the area around Seminyak.

Internationally renowned DJs command the decks at Hypnotized with selections from the electronica, hip hop, house, and trance genres. The late-night venue combines Gothic design with ultra-modern sound and lighting systems for a high-tech, energetic party atmosphere.

Make mine live

While Kuta's dance clubs tend to go heavy on laser shows and cocktails by the bucket, the live music scene maintains an air of sophistication, drawing on a worldly mix of musical styles. Acoustic sets and live band performances tend to start and end earlier than dance parties. Many venues take air conditioning to the extreme, so bring an extra layer if you're planning to do more listening than dancing.

Hard Rock Café and Hard Rock Hotel centrestage

Celebrate the glory days of rock and roll amid the memorabilia and live guitar music at the Kuta branch of the Hard Rock Café. Bands also play centrestage at the Hard Rock Hotel, both located near the main beach intersection.

The Potato Head Beach Club

Behind its silly name and whimsical facade of old teak shutters, the Potato Head Beach Club is quite a classy venue. Past performers have included big names like John Legend, Snoop Dogg, and Fatboy Slim.

Drinks and conversation

Some nights call for a dark corner and quiet, leisurely chat. Kuta's more discreet drinking establishments range from Manhattan-style martini bars to the traditional Irish pub. Or you can linger over cold beers and a plate of mie goreng in one of the many casual warungs scattered throughout the area.

Kori Restaurant & Bar

The authentic Balinese ambiance of Kori Restaurant & Bar provides the tropical romance perfect for a date night. Lush gardens, open-air rooms, and dark wood make the place feel both exotic and home-like.

Ryoshi House of Jazz

Jazz might not come to mind when you think of a Japanese restaurant. But at Ryoshi, in the Seminyak district, sushi and smooth sounds complement each other nicely. Live musicians play mellow dinner sets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
