Where to stay in Houston – a neighborhood guide

Find a place to stay

Houston is a place where you can immerse yourself in culture and history, or take a giant leap into the future among innovative architecture, wide open spaces, and glass-covered mega-malls. If you want luxury and style you’ll have plenty of options for pampering and glamor, but similarly there are plenty of hotels happy to cater to those on a tighter budget across the cities varied and vibrant neighborhoods, so you have more cash to flash in the restaurants and boutiques.

An area where shoppers come to splash out in the Galleria, the Uptown region of Houston is a place of glinting glass and stainless steel architecture, with a thriving business and retail reputation, not to mention plenty of great places to indulge in food and drink after you’ve done with the malls.

Hotels in Galleria/Uptown

It isn’t just the shops where you can expect the best levels of service and the most desirable surroundings, the hotels in Uptown/Galleria offer a similarly high-end experience. Expect dramatic views of the skyline, outdoor pools, and spas if you don’t mind opting for the upper end of accommodation.

If Uptown’s all about shopping, then Downtown is a haven for the performing arts, thanks to its theater district, and to entertainment more generally given its many cinemas, sports teams, and the no-less-enticing range of clubs and bars which give it an enviable nightlife.

Hotels in Downtown

There are a huge range of hotels to choose from downtown, from the recognisable upmarket brands offering a dizzying array of amenities from business centers and outdoor pools to the more reasonably mid-range chains where you can still expect WiFi and fitness facilities.

Northwest Houston

A more suburban experience awaits if you head to Northwest Houston, where planned communities are the order of the day and, as a result, you’ll find plenty of woodland and open-air activities to go with the amenities you’d expect from a well-thought-out residential project, such as high-end restaurants and shops.

Your money will go further in Northwest Houston, with a wide range of budget and mid-range motels and inns available, the majority of which will offer outdoor pools and WiFi. You won’t get the same glamor, but you will find comfort, and convenience.

Energy Corridor

Although this area is named after, and in many ways driven by, the businesses which have centred around it to produce energy, it’s also one of the greenest regions in Houston, and indeed the US. With over 50 miles of parks and trails, as well as the usual metropolitan trappings, this is a suburb with a split personality.

There are also plenty of ways of relaxing, from pools to fitness facilities.
