Beautiful place!
The skyline king was beautiful, and the service was great, even in the midst of the coronavirus. My only complaint is that there were no microwaves available, in the room or elsewhere. Also no dishes, but that was because the restaurant was closed due to the virus. Overall, a great hotel!

A budget hotel experience at a luxury price
This place was okay. Not great. Not terrible. Just "okay". But it was priced like a place that should be amazing. The rooms were expensive to begin with, and then there were over $100 worth of hidden fees to further hike up the prices every night. When I initially selected the rooms, I thought I was getting a really nice hotel for my wife and I over a long weekend. Instead, it turned out to be incredibly small, with no sound-proofing, so every person entering their room in the hall outside sounded as though they were breaking into our room. The elevators didn't work half the time, but there were no option of stairs. There was no wi-fi, no pool, parking cost $77 per night in order to park in what was a urine smelling ghetto lot. There was a restaurant in the hotel, excusing them from the need for a continental breakfast, but the hotel wasn't available for room service when we finished our show because of it's limited hours. And you couldn't order outside food for delivery to the hotel because there were no stairs and the elevators required keycards. Unless, I suppose, you want to sit in the lobby to wait for it. For the same price, I could have been in the Mariott with a luxury room. The only advantage of the Essex was it's location and proximity to arena and convention centers.

Very nice stay!
We loved our stay at the Essex and are looking forward to taking another trip when the weather is nicer. The on-site restaurant was great. Only thing we would change is moving the shelf above the sink in the bathroom. It's impossible to bend over without bonking your head. It would also be nice to have a vending machine option, but they do provide free bottled water which is nice.

Mediocre Experience for Luxury Prices
Hotel Essex is either a very cruddy Luxury Hotel, or a very expensive Budget Hotel. Rooms are clean and well furnished but awkwardly small. Like walk-sideways-to-fit small. You will not be able to fit a rollaway bed for a child on the floor. Price was high to begin with, but then they added $77/day for parking, $13 Wi-Fi & a $18 "urban fee" to charge you extra for having the hotel be in a shady area of downtown. The end result was a price higher than what I've paid for suites at the Mariott, for a room experience that was overall poor. Rooms were LOUD. Not just all the noise of traffic, people, and TRAINS outside, but the interior seemed as though he had no sound-proofing. I'm not talking about loud neighbors or music; people in the hall swiping their keycard on their door and the locks turning were loud enough inside our room that my children became afraid repeatedly thinking an intruder had entered our room. There is no pool. They don't advertise one, but for this much money, and the low quality of the rooms, it seems like there should be one. Elevators require your room keycard, but don't work half the time you swipe it. Hallways are too narrow for two people to walk side by side (or for me to carry my duffle bag at my side). This would have been mediocre by the $100/day standards. Considering the end price was almost $300/day, I felt robbed. And if you enter the parking garage next door, you are likely to actually BE robbed.
