A solid choice for a short stay in Beijing
A solid, mid-range hotel. Comfortable beds and decent service, though given the time of year they had not activated the air-conditioning in the rooms yet.

No heat spoils charming hotel
A charming historic hotel but...no heat in the room. Apparently no heat throughout the hotel. Speculation is that they simply shut it off on a particular date for the "summer" season despite the fact that the overnight temperature outside went down to 36°F on March 23 when we were there. The front desk was unhelpful with the situation.

Nice hotel in terms of territorial positions
We stayed there in the beginning of May. It is very hot, yet the central air conditioning system is still not opened yet...

Not a bad hotel.
There is a comfortable lobby and there was always a sufficient English speaking clerk. The coffee shop and dining area are nice. We liked the Dongfang. I think most who complain are too sensitive to China culture.
Lots of taxis outside. The subway is about 1/3 mile and the #5 bus to Tiananmen Square a bit closer. (Warning: Security made our visit to Tiananmen and Forbidden City terrible. We had to wait in a huge crowd as they screened every visitor. Must have passport for F. City. It was a 2 1/2 hour line! I used to be able to walk right to it! Security unfriendly and rude. Advise use tour guide instead. The tours walked right in. Very disappointed in the Chinese mentality here. We were exhausted by the time they let us in. I'm a healthy 70 years old but...)

NO AIRCONDITIONING
This is a great hotel, great staff & great location with NO AIRCONDITIONING. My recent stay on a 29O day had most of our group near fainting, with sadly no solution but to open a small 30cm window 10cm, on the 21st floor - not good this day & age.
This history of the hotel is lovely as is their Old Time Coffee Shop.

Conveniently located
A hotel with long history & beautiful courtyard. Conveniently located, with many convenience stores and subway station nearby. Fantastic service. Staff was helpful. Just that the carpet was quite dirty.

Decent hotel, coffee shop not open, not close
Hotel itself was nice but the coffee bar didn't open until 9:00. Don't people in China drink coffee before 9am?! Also, our wifi didn't work the whole time we were there. To go anywhere to eat was a 20 minute cab drive. Breakfast was decent.

Cheap but definetely NOT worth the savings.
I only needed a place to sleep for the last night of my stay in Shanghai. - In this regard I booked a somewhat cheap hotelroom close to public transport that could take me to the airport fairly quickly.
Close to public transport and close to the center usually means the prices goes up - Or for the same price a worse hotel. - This much I know and accept.
The room was in a very bad state. The paint in the sealing had giant crackled holes in it, and by the door there was a very suspicious brown blotch that looked like mould.
The so called flatscreen tv can not have been bigger than 20". and had only one foreign channel.
There had been placed some quick to cook food an beverages but there were no refrigiator.
The bed was not a bed. It was a chipboard (I checked) with a, less than 1" thick, soft foam madress. - so the latter was insignificant and useless really.
The walls. as with most of the buildings in China, were very thin so the person next door who snored like a rhino kept me awake all night.
The room did have a fairly good ventilation system though.
In all fairness, I did not check the rest of the hotel, and this was their standard twin bed room - according to the website.
It cost me 329 RNB for one night. - This was an online deal that claimed it to be half the regular price. NOT worth it.
The people behind the frontdesk were friendly and forthcoming but not that good at communicating in english.

Interesting antique rooms
My wife and I stayed in the old wing and our friends stayed in the tower. Although the antiques in our room were lovely, the room felt crowded as a result of all the old furniture. However, I have never stayed in such a hotel room in China and if you want a feeling of old China, make sure you get one of these rooms. I liked the neighborhood with some decent restaurants and street markets with heaps of fresh fruit.

Comfortable hotel with old fashioned character
Built in 1918 this hotel has modern rooms and amenities without losing any of the original character or charm. There is wired internet in the room but wireless is at a cost of a rented modem which is installed promptly upon a call to the front desk. A 200 Yuan cash deposit is required and returned at check out less a 10 Yuan per charge for the modem.
It was very hot during my stay and thankfully the A/C worked very well in my room. The bed was a a bit hard. It did sleep well so I guess the hard'ish' bed was better than I thought it would be. The sheets were clean, nice quality and all white, which I happen to like. The bathroom was clean and the shower was good.
There is a large banquet room on the second floor used to serve a breakfast buffet everyday. The buffet is decent but not stellar. Fresh fried eggs are made as you wait and there are baked goods including toast for American style appetites. If the breakfast is not included in your room price you can pay cash or have charged to your room for 58 Yuan.
There is a convenience store which houses a train ticket kiosk as well as an ATM machine inside the hotel. Also a nice coffee shop.
The front desk staff is very polite and helpful

Great rooms. Long but interesting walk to metro
Stayed in the 2nd cheapest room (just above budget single) and the room was very comfortable. Well lit, nicely appointed bathroom, great bedding, good views. Wifi is now available in rooms by renting a router for about US$1.50 per day. If your device accepts an ethernet cable, internet access is free. There was lots to choose from at the included breakfast but nothing was particularly appealing. While the hotel is at least a 20 minute walk from the nearest metro stop, Xianmen, the walk there through the hutongs is very interesting at all hours, particularly in the evening. Just cross the pedestrian bridge a short block north of the hotel and take the stairs down to the left for the most interesting hutong alley. Authentic Beijing street scenes which I might have missed if I'd stayed at a more centrally located hotel.

Not wonderful
The reception staff at this hotel need to go on a customer care course, as their service was very poor. I had to change room during my stay and it took over an hour to sort this out! I felt that the hotel was looking to maximise its income from each guest rather than concentrating on offering a good experience. Beware the bottled water, as its very expensive, buy from one of the local shops, where its much, much cheaper. The quality of the food at the hotel wasn't very good and again its possible to get better food at reasonable prices in the area around the hotel. I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

Good value hotel
Rooms are spacey with many ammenities included.
Our party got two rooms; one overlooking the street and the other facing inside. The former did not have windows that opened the other one does.
The AC does not seem to work but that was not necessary.

Adequate for a short stay with a tour group
As we were with a tour group, this hotel fitted the bill well. However we were there a day early and found that the location of this hotel made it difficult to find anywhere to eat other than the hotel itself. Front desk staff not very good at suggestions of things to do or restaurants.

Good price but not great location
Hotel OK, nothing special. Service fair. Location fine if you have a car but don't try and get a taxi from the nearest metro station about 1km away if you have luggage. Seems the distance is TOO SHORT for a taxi driver, they just drive away. Otherwise walk is just 15mins.

Nice rooms, great price
I think i got a free upgrade to the 'celebrity' room one night, it's very charming and a great price (around 300rmb). Overall the hotel is very nice, has a lot of character, with antique knick-knacks all over. Very well worth the money
