Learn more about Varenna

Wandering the lakeside promenade feels like stepping into a painting, with centuries-old fishermen's houses in sunset hues clinging to the shoreline. Villa Monastero offers both a museum and botanical gardens where Mediterranean plants thrive improbably against Alpine backdrops. Take the ferry to explore Villa del Balbianello or Villa Carlotta, where manicured gardens frame lake views that have seduced artists for generations. Climb to Castello di Vezio for panoramas that explain why wealthy Milanese have summered here since Roman times. The 'Lover's Walk' wooden boardwalk hugs the rocky coastline just above the water's gentle lap. After exploring, claim a lakeside café table and watch the light change on distant mountains while sipping local wine – the true Varenna experience.

8/10 Good
"When booking this hotel, we knew it wasn't in the city center or close to major sightseeing spots. However, upon arrival, we were still shocked by the location: it is situated in an industrial zone rather than a residential or commercial area. Aside from the poor location, everything else was fine, especially considering the affordable price we paid."

"Like-Location, pool and location and front staff. Dislikes, for a $1000. a night charge no closet was provided. The shower was a slip hazard, we had to lay towels down to prevent slipping. Not allowed to order drinks at the bar, when there was no activity."

"Isabella at the reception desk was an angel, rescuing us after 8+ hours on 4 different trains to arrive in Varenna. She offered us water, checked us in promptly and even set up dinner reservations for us when we mentioned we had t eaten since 8am. The hotel is strategically located on the edge of town right next to the water. Our junior suite was spacious and well appointed. The balcony was our central area of focus when we were in the room. Breakfasts were very good with lots of variety. Definitely a 5 star hotel. Highly recommended."

"Excellent pool area beautiful view and a great walk into town - not that far but a steep hike walking back which we enjoyed - you could opt for the bus which is free if you stay more than 2 nights but we didn’t need it and walked in and out of town twice per day. "I can’t say enough about the concierge team! They were able to arrange transfers, boat excursion, taxi…anything we needed with just an email. It was all arranged prior to arrival and was perfect. The afternoon terrace lunches were delicious, especially the gin and tonic experience. And the housekeeping staff exceptional. If prices drop or rooms become available, you'll be promptly notified for your last-minute getaway.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices can fluctuate depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates may help you find better value for your stay in a hotel in Varenna. For those seeking distinctive experiences, boutique hotels often provide a more personalised touch and, at times, greater value.
