Learn more about Bologna

Beneath medieval towers that lean like tipsy professors, Bologna's terracotta skyline glows amber at sunset. The Piazza Maggiore buzzes with students from the world's oldest university, debating philosophy over plates of perfect tortellini. Climb the precarious wooden stairs of Torre Asinelli for views that explain why they call this 'La Rossa.' The city unfolds beneath 40 kilometres of porticoes – now UNESCO-listed – where locals have strolled protected from rain since the Middle Ages. In the Quadrilatero market, vendors offer mortadella with the reverence others reserve for fine art. Don't miss the unfinished façade of San Petronio Basilica or Neptune's fountain, where the sea god's proportions were strategically reduced to avoid offending papal sensibilities.

"This was a great base for a weekend break in Italy. I was a little worried after realising it wasn't in the city centre but we had a hire car so it wasn't an issue. We also got a taxi to Bologna and back on an evening, which was around €27 each way. There were also some lovely pizza restaurants that we visited in nearby Catenaso. The room was a decent size and we had a pool view. It was clean and housekeeping came in daily to make the beds and quick tidy. The breakfast buffet had a lot of variety including vegan and GF. The pool was great, there was a charge for sunbeds but plenty of other seating that was free near to the bar if you don't want to pay. Staff were friendly. It was a nice hotel in a good location."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Bologna

  1. Book for the cheapest times: For those seeking an affordable escape on a budget, the months of January, February, and August in Bologna might offer lower prices for hotels, making it a great value-for-money destination. It is advisable to plan a stay of at least 2 to 3 days to thoroughly explore the city's key historical landmarks, museums, monuments, cafes, university, cathedral, dining, shopping, churches, and library. This period could drop the overall cost, allowing visitors to enjoy a rich cultural experience without straining their finances.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: To uncover last-minute deals for hotels in Bologna, begin by exploring the DealsOpens in a new window or Last-Minute Deals sections on Hotels.com, where you may discover discounted rates as your travel date approaches. Additionally, consider enabling email alerts or push notifications from Hotels.com to stay updated on flash sales and special promotions, ensuring you don't miss potential savings. With Smart Shopping , available via the app, you can compare hotel prices and amenities, making it easier to find the best options. You'll be promptly informed if rooms become available or prices drop, allowing for an effortless last-minute getaway.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may vary based on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and time of year, so being flexible with your dates might help you save on your stay in a Bologna hotel. For those seeking a unique experience, boutique hotels could provide a more personalised touch and occasionally offer better value. When you book with Hotels.com, we will inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If it appears to be on the higher side, we may suggest more affordable dates which could help you find a better deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels situated near the city centre generally tend to be more expensive, but with Bologna's superb public transport links, you may discover a more affordable independent hotel located further afield that remains well-connected. For those interested in exploring alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money to be found. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
