Find out more about Mariahilf

Flanked north and south by Vienna's 2 busiest shopping streets, Mariahilf is a bohemian-tinged district just southwest of the city center. Diversity is its motto as much as shopping.Vienna's third opera house—the home of famed Austrian composer Haydn—and an aquarium built into a former WWII flak-tower are just some of Mariahilf's highlights. It also packs in theaters, Art Deco architectural wonders, and artsy hangouts into its crowded, storied streets.

Hotels in Mariahilf

You'll find the most highly-rated hotels in Mariahilf are along the Mariahilfer Strasse, one of Vienna's premier shopping promenades. Closest to the attractions of the Innere Stadt (City Center) is the luxury Hotel Das Tyrol. This boutique 4-star hotel is noted for its many decorative artworks, spacious rooms and attention to detail. The Hotel Kummer is a luxury Mariahilf hotel a little further down the Strasse, praised for its location and fine dining. The modern yet stylish Austria Trend Hotel Anatol lies in the quieter western side of Mariahilf. This 4-star hotel is surprisingly affordable, with reviewers loving its spacious rooms and friendly service.

Things to see in Mariahilf

The north end of this neighborhood, next to the MuseumsQuartier, is where it's at its most artsy. The “MQ” has been called Vienna's modern art museum playground, showcasing famed Austrian works at the Leopold Museum, and Picassos and Warhols at the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art) next door. This part of town is crammed with art galleries and designer furniture stores. The Mariahilfer Strasse is a major attraction itself, thanks to its endless parade of flagship department stores, international designer brands, and boutique fashion shops. On the district's south side you'll find shopping of an entirely different character in the open market stalls of the Naschmarkt. Ripe with the scents of cooking, exotic fruits, and regional cheeses, this is where the Viennese come to stock up. Lastly, don't neglect Mariahilf's quirky side. The Haus des Meeres is a prime example, a 150-foot high concrete flak-gun tower that today houses a huge aquarium with an incredible array of marine creatures.

Good for fans of theater, arts and shopping

Mariahilf is a neighborhood that suits artistic indulgence as much as it does luxury shopping sprees, making it a place to suit many moods. Aside from the first-class museums nearby, you can wander around intriguing contemporary galleries, attend small theaters hosting bold dramas or classic musicals, or just be awed by its fabulous Art Nouveau buildings. The district's shopping opportunities are similarly wide-ranging, running from high-end to flea-market, all within easy walking distance of your Mariahilf accommodation. The district is also nestled comfortably close to the Innere Stadt, with the relatively inexpensive hotel rates in Mariahilf a welcome bonus for all travelers.

How to get to Mariahilf

The high-speed ICE service is the best place to start if you're arriving at Vienna's Schwechat International Airport. This will get you to the Wien Meidling station in 25 minutes. There you can switch onto the long-distance EC train service for Wien Westbahnhof, a stop on the west side of Mariahilf. Or you could catch the U6 metro line to Gumpendorfer Strasse, which is better for the south side. Either way you'll probably need to hail a cab or walk the last leg to your Mariahilf hotel. All the local attractions, and the historic Innere Stadt, are easy to reach, either on foot or using the local metro.
