Things to see in Ueno
Ueno Park is the perfect combination of Japanese beauty and culture where sprawling gardens make way for traditional temples and a cherry-tree lined pathway that’s breath-taking in its natural beauty. Opening its gates to the public in 1873, it was formerly part of the Kaneiji Temple, and is now home to many of Tokyo’s popular museums including the Tokyo National Museum. Here, visitors can while away the hours enjoying the historic and artistic displays covering Japanese history. You’ll also find the National Science Museum in the park, where life-size models of blue whales and dinosaurs are bound to impress. Ueno Zoo is the oldest in Tokyo and home to giant pandas! Spenders will delight in the Ameyoko shopping street in the Okachimachi district. This busy market street sells clothes, accessories, dried food, and spices; it’s also a hot-spot for traditional Japanese performing arts and well worth a visit.
