Jacob Rees-Mogg
A poor first impression generally sets up a negative finding of all the faults one would otherwise overlook. When we arrived, the receptionist was lounging à la Jacob Rees-Mogg and I was the first to offer a hello as he was - as he pointed out - busy doing some paperwork. Although polite, he offered little in the way of information and was generally a bit casual about everything. Appreciate it was 6pm on a Sunday evening but it didn’t inspire much confidence. The room was as expected in terms of furnishings etc, but doors and walls were grubby, the carpet was very grubby and trim and such was worn and a bit unsavoury. Perhaps we were given a dirty room as we have a dog, but our tiny chihuahua is less dirty than any person! The bed was extremely uncomfortable because it rolled us to the sides and was small enough to make us anxious of falling out of bed all night. Lastly, the food at dinner and breakfast was average. We appreciate this is a three star hotel, but when the cheap chains can do super clean and repaired for less, it’s disappointing. With the food we spent over £100 so didn’t feel it was good value for money, but probably more a case of trying to look posher than it is while neglecting basics of cleanliness, decor and customer service. We won’t be returning.

Happy :-)
Reception was very helpful and provided good local advice. Breakfast were very good and plentiful. In general the staff made a conspicuous effort to look after the guests and are a credit to their employers. Rooms were spacious clean and comfortable.

Perfect Base to Discover Durham
Great base to explore Durham from. We used our bus pass and travelled into the town which took less than 10 mins. Dinned in the restaurant one night, meal was huge and good value for money. The staff are extremely friendly and will try to do anything you ask of them.
