Magnificent location, but one pays at every turn
The hotel is beautifully designed to take full advantage of its stunning surroundings amongst the vineyards of the Douro Valley, and there are magnificent views from its many expansive terraces and communal areas. A highlight is also its own huge parklands, through which one can stroll all the way down to the river. Our room was very spacious and modern, with all the amenities one expects from a 5-star hotel. However, to us, a downside was a feeling of it being over-serviced. Perhaps it is because we are not familiar with the Six Senses chain, but we also felt a bit put out by the fact that, no sooner have you checked in, than you are handed a list of activities, very few of which are included in the already steep room charge, and the rest of which seemed, to us exorbitantly priced. Dinner in their restaurant was delicious, but the pressure to drink a lot of wine before, during and after is annoying for those who are not big drinkers and seems a bit at odds with it also attempting to create an image of itself as health and wellness retreat.

Idyllic location. Check-in and front desk staff go out of their way to ensure that you have a memorable time. Service is outstanding. Rooms and facilities are excellent. There is no courtesy shuttle, and taxi services are limited. A range of easy transportation connections to nearby towns is one thing lacking, although this would not have been an issue if we had rented a car from Porto. Better transport may also give easier access to food and activity choices that are more varied. Not inexpensive! The beauty of the surrounding landscape is truly refreshing. Overall a wonderful experience.
