Poor 2,0
Poor Expectation Setting
I was "upgraded" to the Attic which was framed to me as the Penthouse of the ACE Hotel. Given I had to take 2 elevators to get there and wind down a long hallway to get there, I thought the journey would be worth it. My expectations were high. What I found instead was the worst hotel room I've been in in recent memory. It was a cave with two tiny windows that looked out onto a walled off roof. There was no bedside table or any light source except the overhead light. I had to request a lamp. The audio didn't work on the TV. The bathroom was hilarious. You could bathe, shave and use the toilet at the same time. Rather than setting my expectations that I was getting a special room, they should have been honest and said, "Listen, this is a shit hole of a room, but you can live the authentic experience of a starving artist for the nights you are here." Speaking of starving, the chef refused to sub a veggie (any veggie) for fries, but very kindly offered that I just buy a full on salad entree if I wanted veggie. Chef seemed offended by the request.

While our room had a couple of issues, the Ace stepped up and genuinely cared if these were resolved. Our favorite place to stay just gets better. Thanks Ace team!

Friendly staff, but place needs maintenance
Place has a modern industrial decor, was always pretty lively in the lobby, friendly staff and great location. However, the hotel overall is kind of dark, which I think is part of the style. My room had a bunch of issues. The first is that the phone would randomly ring for 5 seconds and then beep every hour. In order to stop it I had to unplug the phone. The bed was so so and not the most comfortable. Lastly and I think the worst part was the toilet kept on running one morning. I opened up the top thinking I could fix it myself by making sure the plug was down and the water hose started spraying all over the place in the bathroom. I probably should have just called maintenance right away but I've had the some problem in my own house which is normally a quick simple fix. The rooms and hotel has "style" but is getting dated and in need of some maintenance.

Avoid the Attic.....Actually, just Avoid
If they offer you at Attic room - refuse it. Room was dark, stuffy, and smelled. Windows were almost non-existent and there were only overhead lights by the door. The lamp by the bed worked intermittently. AC was right over bed, so either dealt w warm, stuffy, smelly room or cold air being dumped on me as I slept. It was mostly quiet - except for resident of PH2 periodically practicing his trumpet. Black carpet darkened room and not sure about how clean it was. Very low water pressure in the shower. Lobby is crowded all day with squatters working on laptops and music is loud so no real place to relax outside of room. Thought price was at least decent until I got charged a SURPRISE $29 destination fee (+tax). FOR WHAT???? New York hotels are no bargain, but you expect a certain level of quality. Sadly, this fell far short of what I’d expect at this price point... or even for less.

Kindness Abounds
Our room was not ready due to previous guests never having checked out nor informing the front desk. Christina, the manager on duty, was wonderful and put us in another room (somewhat of an upgrade) and was extremely pleasant to work with (then again I was not a ranting maniac either). Christina kindly comped us room service and drink tickets to the Lobby Bar/Restaurant for our inconvenience. Everything was a win win for all.
