Find out more about Orange

Orange Hotels

Orange has its roots in Roman times, and has become a popular destination for history buffs thanks to its dedication to preserving the architecture of the time. There's a busy cultural calendar, with a major opera festival in the summer, and classical and modern music events throughout the year. Just outside of Orange you'll find the rolling vineyards of Provence, and the town is a great place to sample locally produced wines, as well as traditional French cuisine in one of the many cosy bistros.

Things to see

Orange Amphitheatre‎ dates back to the 1st century, and most of the structure has been amazingly preserved. It's one of the few amphitheatres in the world to still have its scaenae frons standing – the elaborate scenery built by Romans, where actors could enter from different points. In summer, the annual Chorégies festival brings opera lovers to the town, with internationally renowned acts and most of the 9,000 seats sold out quickly. The Triumphal Arch of Orange is also a great example of Roman architecture, which is said to date back to about AD 27. This imposing structure used to help guard the northern entryway to the town, with restored columns and carvings that have a distinctly Roman look. Many archaeological digs have taken place in Orange, and at the Museum of Art and History you can see some of the relics that have been discovered. The museum covers history from prehistoric to 18th century, taking you through all the changes that the town has gone through, as well as welcoming art from internally renowned artists from classic to modern.

Hotels in Orange

There are hotels in Orange to suit all sorts of budgets, with affordable 2 to 3 star accommodation that's clean and comfortable. You'll find both boutique properties and cheap hotels in Orange that are part of major chains, allowing you to enjoy extras such as free WiFi, complimentary continental breakfasts, and free parking for the duration of your stay. The larger hotels often have restaurants and bars on-site, as well as outdoor pools open during the summer months, and you can sometimes enjoy saunas and steam rooms too. Choose one of the area's boutique hotels and you'll enjoy cosy, individually designed rooms, and many hotels offer triple and quadruple rooms for families and groups.

Where to stay

Orange is an ideal destination for architecture admirers, with many well preserved examples of Roman buildings around the town. It also manages to have a traditionally French vibe, with town squares surrounded by cafés and bistros with tables spilling out onto the pavements. You'll find many narrow, cobbled streets, with charming local shops where you can pick up a souvenir. The area is famous for the many different varieties of wine it produces, and so a visit to one of the wineries is essential, allowing you to pick a favourite and take home some affordable bottles. If you have the time, then booking a tour of a local vineyard will also help you to learn more about wine, and it's great to wander around the lush green vineyards, watching grapes ripen in the sun before trying the wine.

How to get to Orange

Avignon - Caumont Airport, also known as the Avignon – Provence Airport, is less than half an hour's drive from Orange, and there are taxis and private shuttles available to take you to your hotel. Most arrivals at the airport are from the UK, with seasonal flights to London City, Birmingham, and Southampton on low cost airlines, although there's also a service from Liège in Belgium.
