Mafikeng Introduction

Mafikeng, the capital of North-West Province, is a city deeply entrenched in history. It played a significant role in the Second Boer War, surviving a 217-day siege that boosted British morale and turned the war's tide. But Mafikeng is more than its history. It's a university town and serves as home to North-West University's Mafikeng campus and the International School of South Africa. It also has a number of game reserves around it, including the Mafikeng Game Reserve.

Those that cater to budget travellers tend to offer limited amenities, though you might find some that feature restaurants, gardens and barbecue areas. Lodging options on the pricier end of the spectrum have a wider range of amenities available. These amenities can include swimming pools, fitness centres and conference spaces. There are also country-style holiday apartments in Mafikeng offering the comforts of home.

North-West University and the Botanical Gardens are nearby.

Things to see

Mmabatho is the former capital of North-West Province. However, it has been relegated as a suburb of Mafikeng. Because of its past, you'll find many provincial government buildings in this area. It also has many Mafikeng attractions, including the Botanical Gardens, the North-West University and the Mmabatho Stadium. Mafikeng Airport is also in Mmabatho. Mafikeng Game Reserve is a 4,600-hectare nature reserve right within Mafikeng. It features a combined landscape of acacia thorn scrub and Kalahari grassland. The reserve is home to giraffes, zebra, springboks, buffalo and wildebeest. It's also a breeding centre for white rhinos and actively involved in efforts against rhino poaching. The Mafikeng Museum is a must-see if you're keen to learn more about Mafikeng's history and culture. The museum has permanent exhibits on the Boer Wars and on the life and times of ANC founder Sol T. Plaatje. The parkland-type Leopard Park Golf Course is a lush oasis on the dry Mmabatho land.
