Nelspruit Introduction

Nelspruit is the beating heart of South Africa's Mpumalanga Province. It's the province's financial centre, playing host to the provincial headquarters of all of South Africa's biggest financial and banking institutions. It's also an important commercial destination, with its shopping centres drawing crowds from even Mozambique across the border. This suburb is right on the outskirts of Nelspruit Nature Reserve and the Tshwane University of Technology campus. Also located just outside Nelspruit Nature Reserve is Sonheuwel. Nelspruit is a shopping mecca. One of its biggest attractions is Riverside Mall and Park. Located on the Crocodile Riverbank, the mall has 140 shops, numerous restaurants and an entertainment centre. Within Riverside Park is the Emnotweni Casino and Entertainment Complex, which boasts of nearly 500 slot machines, 18 gaming tables and a multi-purpose events venue. Near Riverside is the enchanting Lowveld Botanical Gardens, home to almost 3,000 plant species set on 159 hectares of rugged terrain. A short drive from Nelspruit are the Sudwala Caves, the world's oldest cave system. The Sudwala Caves are estimated to be 240 million years old and contain magnificent crystal chambers. Nelspruit is also regarded as the gateway to Kruger National Park. The park is South Africa's largest wildlife reserve – it's home to 253 bird species, 147 mammal species, 114 reptile species and 50 fish species. Many of the animals the park protects are endangered.

How to get to Nelspruit

The Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is 25 kilometres from Nelspruit. You can fly there directly from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. You can also drive yourself to Nelspruit from Johannesburg or Pretoria. It will take you approximately 3 to 4 hours to get to Nelspruit from these areas. Alternatively, you can ride a bus from Johannesburg or Pretoria to visit Nelspruit. There are also buses that travel from Nelspruit to Maputo in Mozambique daily. The best way to get around Nelspruit is by car. You can hire a car at the airport or from rental depots in the city.
