Where to Stay in Whitby - Bed-and-breakfasts, Harborside Hotels, and Boutique Cottages

Find a place to stay

The terraced bed-and-breakfasts and Victorian hotels on West Cliff add to Whitby’s appeal as a traditional seaside resort. Former fishing cottages line East Cliff’s narrow streets; some have been converted into self-catering apartments, while others have been given a boutique makeover. Families might prefer the harbor hotels’ proximity to the sights, while couples can opt for a romantic stay at a country spa.

West Cliff

The primary draw for visitors to the hotels and guesthouses of West Cliff are the expansive vistas over the beach and North Sea. A striking whalebone arch frames the view of Whitby Abbey across the river, while the Captain Cook statue proudly looks out to sea. Golfers tee off at Whitby Golf Course, while little ones can practice their aim at the Arnold Palmer Putting Course.

Most B&Bs in the West Cliff area are quintessential seaside guesthouses and are found in the network of quiet terraced streets. Thanks to their elevated location, many benefit from stunning sea views.

East Cliff

If you walk through the narrow cobbled streets of Whitby's east side, you’ll pass a parade of lively pubs, cozy cafés, and jewelry stores full of Whitby jet stone. High above the town, accessed via a 199-step stone stairway, you'll find the ruins of Whitby Abbey. Down below, the pebbly beach is great for rock pooling and fossil hunting.

Almost all of the whitewashed cottages leading down to the beach were once the homes of fishermen; today, visitors enjoy their relaxed style and proximity to the beach, pier, and abbey.

The harbor area

colourful fishing boats bob up and down in Whitby’s harbor, while the long quayside is lined with buzzy amusement arcades, fish-and-chips takeouts, and candy stalls. Children will love the sandy west beach, where they can build sandcastles and take donkey rides, while older kids can test their nerves in the Dracula Experience.

Lots of harborside pubs and restaurants also provide B&B facilities, with many of the high-end establishments offering boutique rooms. A number of the area's apartments and townhouses provide modern self-catering accommodation.

Out of town

Whitby’s surrounding countryside offers hiking and cycling paths through some of England's most stunning scenery. Visitors will find plentiful accommodation in many of the surrounding chocolate-box villages, and there are campsite and caravan sites too. Walking and cycle trails snake through the woods and moorland, with frequent village inns providing fortifying real ale and traditional Yorkshire dishes.

Deluxe country retreats are only a short drive out of Whitby's centre. For smaller budgets, there are plenty of genteel village pubs offering accommodation, some of which add an upmarket twist to their rustic aesthetic.
