Family Friendly Things to Do in Plymouth - From Aquariums to Segway Adventures

Find a place to stay

In case conjuring up tall ships and salty sea captains, pirate treasure, and epic ocean battles weren't enough, Plymouth has lots of family-friendly activities - plus a huge park. There’s a cool lighthouse to explore, the largest aquarium in the UK, a 180-foot-wide pool, and even adventure treks on all-terrain Segways. The annual British Firework Championships are also held here.

Water sports: epic sea challenges

Plymouth’s waters have always been filled with challenges. The Royal Navy’s tall ships set sail from here to defend the crown against hostile attacks and greedy pirates. In modern times, the world's greatest sailing competition, the America’s Cup, has taken place here. Now you can conquer these historic waters in brand new ways.

Mount Batten Centre

You can get here via a short ferry ride on the Mount Batten Ferry from the Barbican. A wide range of challenging activities and instruction courses cover sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding, plus land-based activities like rock climbing.

Beaches and the aquarium

When you’re playing in the sand or the waves at the beach, it’s fun to imagine all the wonders just below the surface, and a little exploration can bring that imagination to life. Look for small rock pools where hermit crabs, lobsters, anemones and starfish all thrive among the rocks and surging tide, then go much deeper with a day at the aquarium.

Bigbury-on-Sea

A 50-minute drive from Plymouth, the beach at Bigbury-on-Sea is one of the best in the region. You can explore Burgh Island via special sea tractor and visit Venus Café for lunch. Beach wheelchairs are available.

National Marine Aquarium

Great for rainy days, rooms here explore local, British, Atlantic, and worldwide sea life. Then, divers give you a tour of the largest tank in the country - from inside the tank. Get tickets in advance and skip the line.

Kids at play

Sometimes, kids want to try cool new things. And sometimes, they just want to run around until they drop. For both, a great place to go is West Hoe Park, a wonderland for young ones with a large playground, a miniature railway, crazy golf, trampolines, a merry-go-round, and a bouncy castle. For a long day, great takeout food is available nearby.

West Hoe Park Playground

The playground itself has a wheelchair accessible merry-go-round and swing seat, a seesaw, and a multi-play unit. There’s also a secret garden with wooden climbing features throughout.

Adventure walks and treks

There are a number of walks to explore in Plymouth, from the historically enlightening Waterfront Walkway to the City Centre Wildlife Trail. But if you want a little more adrenaline in your exploring, take the ferry to Mount Edgcumbe and check out the coastal and wildlife expeditions available - on an all-terrain Segway.

Waterfront Walkway

Part of the much longer South West Coast Path, this walkway has a downloadable guide that explains various artworks along the walk. It also offers up historical tidbits - like how Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle came to live in Plymouth.
