A Houston travel guide – American football, fine arts and designer shopping

Find a place to stay

A Houston vacation can mean everything from spectator sports and designer shoes, to contemporary art and thick, juicy steaks. Book a Houston hotel and discover the many sides of Texas’s largest city.

All-American sports

Whatever the season, the season is always in full swing in Houston, a city that loves its sports. The NFL football team Houston Texans continues a long tradition of passionate American football at Reliant Stadium in the Astrodome neighborhood. Fans also dig into hot dogs and popcorn while they watch the Houston Astros play professional baseball in Minute Maid Park just east of downtown. Nearby the NBA’s Houston Rockets and American Hockey League Houston Aeros entertain sports lovers at the Toyota Center.

Designer dresses and cowboy boots

Spend time on your Houston vacation shopping for designer clothing, trendy accessories or cowboy-style leather goods. The city’s prime shopping district is found uptown, where The Galleria houses upscale shops like Saks, Jimmy Choo and Louis Vuitton. The Heights is a neighborhood known for independent coffee shops and funky boutiques, selling second-hand designer wear, trendy handbags and antiques along 19th Street. For an authentic Texas souvenir, pick up custom-made boots at Tejas. This Western shop has a reputation for high-quality leatherwork and has outfitted celebrities and prime ministers from around the world.

Diverse museums

Anti-gravity demonstrations and lunar orbiter simulators fill the displays at Space Center Houston, part museum and part NASA visitor center. Add to the museum experience with a tour of NASA’s Johnson Space Center next door. The Houston Museum District houses 18 museums with fine art, history and science collections. Take a look at the works of Mark Rothko and Cy Twombly at the free Menil Collection, play games at the Children’s Museum, or identify clouds at the Weather Museum.
